Progress continues on CMU College of Medicine

Saginaw sites identified for clinical and administrative facilities

Central Michigan University announced today that two Saginaw properties — located in close proximity to its affiliation partners Covenant HealthCare and St. Mary’s of Michigan — have been identified for the required clinical education, clinical practice and administrative needs to train its medical students.

“The selected locations will enable us to provide a significantly enhanced educational experience for our students by fully utilizing the expertise, training programs and state-of-the-art facilities of our partners,” said CMU President George E. Ross. “CMU remains committed to addressing the improved delivery of primary health care in mid- and northern Michigan through an innovative curriculum that integrates longitudinal clinical experience and involvement with patients, families and communities.”

The parcels, located on Hoyt Avenue adjacent to the St. Mary’s of Michigan campus and on Irving Avenue near Covenant HealthCare, meet the key criteria including proximity to the hospitals, parking availability, highly accessible and visible traffic area, and expansion capacity.

“We are pleased that Saginaw Future was part of a very dynamic site analysis team and believe that the two locations will serve the University and the community for years to come,” said Saginaw Future President JoAnn Crary. “If you look at any successful urban area, it has a university presence. A medical school further enhances our reputation as a leader in health care services and its contributions will be far-reaching.”

Citing the involvement and support of its hospital partners, Saginaw Future and the city of Saginaw and the engagement of URS consultants, Ross expressed appreciation for the comprehensive, collaborative and strategic approach employed in the review and evaluation of more than a dozen proposed properties.

Ross emphasized that work continues and is on schedule for the $24 million, 60,000-square-foot addition to the Health Professions Building, located on CMU’s Mount Pleasant campus.

In December 2010, the University created CMU Medical Education Partners, a unique relationship with Covenant HealthCare and St. Mary’s of Michigan to provide for clinical education for CMU’s College of Medicine.

To date, the University has established affiliation agreements with 11 medical partners to serve as sites for the clinical education of CMU medical students.
