Open forums scheduled for CMU institutional diversity candidates

Finalists seeking to become Central Michigan University’s associate vice president for institutional diversity will participate in open forums starting Jan. 15 to address their qualifications.
 
Search committee chairperson Pam Gates, dean of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, has announced two candidates will undergo a series of interviews and hold public forums for the position. Candidates and their open forum dates include:
 
  • Traci Guinn, interim associate vice president for institutional diversity at Central Michigan University, Tuesday, Jan. 15.
  • Lawrence Burnley, assistant vice president for diversity and intercultural relations and assistant professor of history at Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash., Wednesday, Jan. 16.
 
Open campus forums for both candidates will be held from 2 to 2:50 p.m. in the Lake Superior Room of the Bovee University Center on the date of their visit. A student forum will follow from 3 to 3:50 p.m. at the same location.
 
The associate vice president for institutional diversity is responsible for providing leadership to plan and implement diversity efforts. This includes initiating and championing diversity efforts related to curricular and co-curricular programs; providing leadership and education to promote a climate conducive to the expansion of diversity; preparing and submitting grants to support diversity efforts; creating mechanisms to encourage input, participation and support of directly affected groups; and providing leadership for a variety of offices tasked with institutional diversity initiatives.
