Gary Shapiro
E. Gary Shapiro is the executive vice president/provost. Shapiro leads the academic division, which includes six academic colleges, the College of Medicine, the College of Graduate Studies, off-campus programs, research and sponsored programs, libraries, institutional diversity, international education, student affairs, academic affairs, academic administration, information technology, and student publications.
 
Shapiro came to Central Michigan University in 1978 and taught in CMU’s Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work Department from 1978 to 1989, where he was promoted to professor before taking administrative positions with the university. He was appointed director of institutional research in 1989, assistant vice provost for institutional research and planning in 1993, and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1995. He also served as interim registrar and 1994-95 while continuing to serve as vice provost. Prior to his role as provost, Shapiro had been dean of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences since its formation in July 1997 and served as interim provost in 2007 and from July 2009 through April 2010.
 
Before coming to CMU, he was a member of the sociology faculty at the University of Iowa. He received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Michigan in 1972. He also holds a master's degree in sociology from the University of Michigan and received a bachelor's of science from Wayne State University with majors in math and sociology.
 
He has published articles in the areas of reward allocations in groups, preferences for job rewards, help-seeking behavior, and student evaluation of instruction. He has taught classes in the areas of social psychology, research methods and statistics, organizations, and the sociology of gambling.
