Central Michigan University has received notification from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of its vote to continue the preliminary accreditation status of the CMU College of Medicine’s educational program leading to a medical degree.

“We are very pleased with this positive response from LCME,” said Ernie Yoder, dean of CMU’s College of Medicine.  “This notification reflects the confidence LCME has in our medical education program and takes us one step closer to establishing America’s 137th medical school.”

This accreditation report from LCME addressed the following standards: bylaws, medical student interaction with other health professionals, residents, physicians and trainees, research opportunities, financial aid and debt counseling, learning environment and professionalism, student mistreatment, sufficient faculty, and dean and faculty determination of academic policies.

The survey visit for provisional accreditation of the College of Medicine’s educational program will take place during the 2014-15 academic year.

This notification follows preliminary accreditation from LCME in February and is part of the ongoing process leading to full accreditation, anticipated following the first class of students completing the program in 2017.

The College of Medicine has been involved in the stringent accrediting process with LCME since 2009. LCME is the nationally recognized accrediting authority for medical education programs leading to the M.D. degree in U.S. and Canadian medical schools.

Applications are being accepted for the College of Medicine’s inaugural class via the American Medical College Application Service. As of Dec. 6, the college had received 2,655 student applications. Students must apply by Dec. 15. Sixty students will be accepted for the first class, which will begin its studies next summer.
