CMU-RC spurs economic development

With the creation of 85 jobs in the last year, the Central Michigan University Research Corp. is now in its 12 year of advancing economic development in the mid Michigan region and across the state.

 

In an update to the Central Michigan University Board of Trustees Thursday, CMU-RC President and CEO Erin Strang said that they are currently assisting 21 companies.

 

“As a State of Michigan SmartZoneTM, CMU-RC harnesses the intellectual and technological capital from CMU to assist entrepreneurs in launching successful businesses,” said Strang. “Our mission is to serve as an incubator for businesses in their early developmental stages and then migrate them into the community once they have a solid foundation.”

 

CMU-RC provides assistance to entrepreneurs and companies that have high growth potential.  The company must have some type of intellectual property, innovative technology or service. Current businesses range from alternative energy, advanced manufacturing and life sciences to homeland security and defense. 

 

“A critical part of CMU’s mission is community engagement, and economic development is paramount to what CMU is doing,” said Dr. George E. Ross, CMU president. “The economic recovery of Michigan is arguably job one not only for the Governor, legislators and business leaders, but for the universities in this state. We believe CMU plays a leading role in that economic recovery through CMU-RC.”

 

In addition to accessing the university’s intellectual and technological resources, CMU-RC also provides business acceleration and support, physical space for operations and connections for businesses.
