CMU trustees gather for February meeting

President Ross outlines investment in academic programs
February 2012 Board of Trustees meeting
Central Michigan University President George E. Ross announced Thursday that the university’s academic prioritization process is complete. In sharing this information with the CMU Board of Trustees during their regular meeting Thursday, Dr. Ross also outlined increased funding for top ranked programs.

The year-long academic prioritization process of more than 400 academic programs was conducted to determine how the university can better focus on the future by investing in programs that advance academic excellence and student learning while making the university more responsive in areas of strength and emerging interest.

President Ross informed trustees that nearly $6 million will be invested in programs ranked in categories one and two with $3.6 million being earmarked from the general fund and $2.2 million being reallocated by the various academic colleges.

“We must and will continue our strategic investment in CMU’s academic enterprise,” said President Ross. “This investment will be used for tenure-track faculty positions, fixed term faculty, additional graduate assistant positions, and supplies and equipment. Today’s announcement reflects the continued and ongoing commitment to providing an exceptional education and learning environment for our students.”

Compensation for faculty and staff was included in the president’s report to the board. Dr. Ross noted that professor salary and promotion adjustments were paid to eligible faculty on Jan. 31 along with a one-time lump-sum payment to recognize their contributions toward the achievement of CMU’s academic mission.

In addition, staff members who received a 0 percent salary adjustment for one year and are now in their second year also will receive a one-time lump-sum payment of 2.25 percent.

“We must, and we will, recognize our staff employees for their tremendous contributions and commitment to our students and to this strong university,” said Dr. Ross. “This enabled the university to avoid layoffs and furloughs and to achieve the lowest tuition increases among Michigan’s public universities during the past two years.”

Employee groups receiving the one-time payment include professional and administrative, office professional, public broadcasting, supervisory-technical, non union fixed-term faculty, and senior officers. President Ross will not be accepting the payment.

In other board action, trustees:

  • Approved a resolution allowing the CMU athletics department to enter into an agreement with International Management Group. IMG will build on athletics initiatives to sell corporate sponsorships; leverage its media, publicity and broadcast rights for its sports teams; and generate revenue.

  • Approved a resolution allowing the university to request conveyance of land leased to the State Building Authority for construction of the Dow Science Building back to CMU. The land had been leased to the state since 1992 while bonds used to finance the construction of the facility, which provides much needed laboratory, research and academic space, were paid off.
