CMU to honor top faculty at Faculty Excellence Exhibition

Total of 12 awards to be given to 11 outstanding faculty

Central Michigan University will honor several outstanding faculty at the 2013 Faculty Excellence Exhibition at 3 p.m.  March 20 in the Park Library Auditorium. President’s and Provost’s Awards, Excellence in Teaching Awards and the Lorrie Ryan Memorial Teaching Award will be given to 11 faculty members.
 
President’s Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity
Created for peers to select and recognize outstanding senior faculty members for scholarship of national and international merit.
 
  • Donald Uzarski, biology, has been a principal investigator on 15 funded external grants for a total of $11.7 million.
  • Jeffrey Weinstock, English language and literature, scholar of Gothic, horror and fantasy, has ushered four monographs into print, managed four compilations of critical essays, edited the collected fiction of H.P. Lovecraft and generated six book chapters while at CMU.
 
Provost’s Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity
Created for peers to select and recognize less experienced faculty members for scholarship of national and international merit.
 
  • Rebecca Hayes, sociology, anthropology & social work, recognized nationally and internationally for her published work in two of the world’s leading journals concerning sexual violence among college students and published the top downloaded article for Contemporary Justice Review.
  • Andrew Mahon, biology, widely recognized for his work identifying invasive species in fresh water and research in Antarctica.
  • Zachary Williams, marketing & hospitality services administration, received nine research awards for his studies focused on relevant issues in buyer and seller relationships, employee hiring and retention and sustainability issues.
 
Faculty Distinguished Service Award
The Office of the Provost created this award in 2002 to acknowledge faculty with a record of sustained and distinguished service.
 
  • John Mitchell, finance and law, consistently participating in the life and governance of the institution that brings vigorous service to students and colleagues.
 
Lorrie Ryan Memorial Excellence in Teaching Award
Given each year to a faculty member who inspires students through exemplary commitment to community service and demonstrates a profound mentorship and respect for others.
 
  • Elina Erzikova, journalism, dedicated to building a strong sense of community within the classroom and ensures every student’s voice is heard.
 
Excellence in Teaching Awards
Created by the Academic Senate to provide special recognition to faculty members who exceed the usual standards and expectations.
 
  • Kathy Blystone, chemistry,shows her enthusiasm for the subject using real-life examples to demonstrate how chemistry impacts students’ lives every day.
  • Elina Erzikova, journalism, applies her experience as a public relations practitioner and passion for the field and her students by challenging them to think outside the box.
  • Chris Latty, human environmental studies, possesses a wealth of knowledge and relevancy on up-to-date information and provides locations in conversations, lectures and activities for applied learning opportunities.
  • Debra Poole, psychology,effectively integrates her roles as a scholar, scientist and educator to encourage students to analyze and synthesize information.
  • Leslie Wallace, School of Health Sciences, has an open door policy that provides an outlet for students to receive advice and help on academics and real-life situations.
