CMU's Grand Central Magazine wins national EPPY award

Named Best College/University Journalism Website
2012-070-089 Grand Central editorial meeting
Central Michigan University’s Grand Central Magazine is continuing its award-winning performance by earning an EPPY award from Editor and Publisher magazine, the trade journal covering the international journalism industry. The student-run online publication has been named Best College/University Journalism Website for 2011.

In winning the top honor, Grand Central competed against finalists from DePaul University, Temple University, Berry College and City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism.

“To be recognized as the best among the other universities entered is a big honor,” said Betsy Rau, Grand Central Magazine faculty adviser. “Winning such an award is really motivating. It sets the bar even higher for everyone.”

The 16th annual EPPY awards honor the best media-affiliated websites. College and university journalism entries are recognized in five categories and judged by a panel of experts in the media industry. Entries are judged on usability, overall impression, functionality, design, browser capability and content.

“This is the most prestigious award we’ve won,” said Lakeview senior Matt Erspamer, Grand Central editor. “Seeing Grand Central listed among winners like Sports Illustrated and The Boston Globe, that’s quite an honor.”

This is the fourth industry award in three years for Grand Central Magazine. The publication also has been recognized by the Association of Collegiate Press and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Launched in 2007, Grand Central is run by a volunteer staff of 30 students, including a team of 10 editors, working together to produce fresh feature content presented through various multimedia styles.
