Central Michigan University will receive nearly $1.8 million from the State of Michigan for qualifying for a tuition restraint incentive appropriation. The appropriation, part of the education omnibus appropriations act signed by Gov. Rick Snyder in June, qualifies universities who have limited their tuition increases to less than 4 percent.

The lower the percentage of tuition increase, the higher the allocation from the $9 million tuition restraint funding pool. With an increase of 2 percent, CMU will receive nearly 20 percent of state funds.

CMU President George E. Ross says the additional funding speaks to CMU’s commitment toward keeping a reasonable tuition fee for students.

“The additional $1.8 million in state appropriations for CMU is appropriate given the fact that over the past three years combined, CMU has had the lowest increase in tuition of any university in Michigan,” Ross said.

The additional appropriation is for fiscal year 2013. CMU’s tuition increase is 1.96 percent for the current academic year. Ross says maintaining the lowest tuition rates possible will ensure CMU is helping to prepare students with an education for their future success.

“We must continue to be sensitive to ensuring that higher education is accessible and affordable to our students and their families with academic programs that are relevant in preparing students for today’s job market,” Ross said.

In addition to receiving tuition restraint incentive appropriations, CMU also will receive nearly $1.5 million in performance funding from the state. The performance metrics included a criteria of reverse transfer agreements with community colleges, dual enrollment policies that do not prevent using the same credits earned for high school graduation to also count toward college credit, and participation in the Michigan Transfer Network.
