CMU extends Maxine Berman's term as Griffin Endowed Chair

Maxine Berman
Central Michigan University’s department of political science has extended Maxine Berman’s term as the Griffin Endowed Chair in American Government through June 2013.

As chair, Berman teaches two political science seminars and organizes two forums each year addressing public policy and political issues throughout Michigan.

Berman, the fourth individual to hold the Griffin chair, began her initial three-year term in the position in August 2009. She was the director of special projects for former Gov. Jennifer Granholm from 2003 to 2010. Prior, she served as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1983 to 1996.

Throughout her career Berman has researched and advocated for women’s issues, affirmative action and stem cell research, as well as worked closely with an advisory group to rearrange the structure of the Michigan government.

The Griffin Endowment was created in 1999 through private donations as a tribute to distinguished alumni Robert and Marjorie Griffin. The Griffin program aims to further interest and participation in political issues among young adults, faculty and the public.
