Central Michigan University has received notification that the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has granted five-year institutional accreditation to the residency programs sponsored by the College of Medicine.

The ACGME Institutional Review Committee commended CMU Medical Education Partners (Covenant HealthCare and St. Mary’s of Michigan) for its demonstrated substantial compliance with the ACGME’s institutional requirements without citations.

“We are very excited to receive this accreditation and proud to be a leader among residency programs in being granted full five-year accreditation status without any reservations,” said Ernie Yoder, dean of CMU’s College of Medicine.

The ACGME is the largest private professional organization in the country responsible for accrediting residency education programs. Residency education is the clinical portion in a medical specialty following graduation from medical school and prepares physicians for the independent practice of medicine.

The College of Medicine received 2,765 applications for its inaugural class by the Dec. 15 deadline. Sixty students will be accepted for the first class, which will begin its studies next summer.
