Twenty Central Michigan University Honors Scholar students will engage in the CMU College of Medicine’s clinical, classroom and community events as part of a program tailored to prepare them for a medical school education.

An early assurance opportunity program, called CMEDHonors, will launch in the spring of 2015 and give select honors students a thorough understanding of the College of Medicine and its mission to provide quality health care to underserved regions of the state.

“This is a great opportunity for honors students to learn more about the medical field, CMED and life as a medical student,” said Chris Austin, director of admissions for the CMU College of Medicine. “It also is a way for CMED to form a stronger bridge within CMU to our undergraduate programs.”

CMEDHonors students will be selected from the honors program as freshmen in their first semester at CMU. After experiencing CMED’s academic rigor and working with a mentor from the medical school, up to five students will be offered an early assurance of admission to the College of Medicine prior to their senior year.

CMEDHonors students must take the Medical College Admissions Test no later than May of their junior year and achieve a minimum score of 24 to be considered for the five slots. All program participants must complete a College of Medicine application and participate in the College of Medicine’s interviews for admission.

CMEDHonors students who go through the program but are not selected for early assurance can still apply to the CMU College of Medicine through the American Medical College Application Service process.

Applications for the early assurance program will be available in the fall 2014 semester. Austin said CMEDHonors will be an ongoing program, with 20 honors students joining each year.
