Central Michigan University’s Apparel Merchandising and Design program has landed CMU as No. 20 on the list of one of the top fashion merchandising schools in the country and No. 31 fashion design school. Fashion Schools’ website awards state-of-the-art technology and focus on latest design trends.

The list, published by Fashion-schools.org, a national evaluation site for prospective design students, ranks CMU the highest-ranking Michigan school and among the top 15 percent of all schools reviewed in the country.

“When you look at the research we do, the placements of our graduates, the way we prepare students for the real world, we hit it out of the ballpark,” said Carol Beard, assistant professor of apparel merchandising and design.

Fashion-schools.org considered more than 200 schools in the U.S. that offered fashion programs. The criteria included academic reputation, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of the program and faculty, and geographic location. The website commends CMU for using state-of-the-art technology in its instruction.

CMU’s Apparel Merchandising and Design program is known nationally for its use of technology. Faculty and students have worked with companies and organizations such as Carhartt, Lululemon, Reebok and the Atlanta Braves minor league baseball teams, using state-of-the-art equipment in CMU’s lab to help address product questions for the manufacturers and sports-oriented athletic organizations.

Students use biofeedback technology to gauge consumer’s reactions to clothing, thermal mannequins to research the thermal patterns of the human body, body scanners to allow garments to be customized to individual dimensions, and an environmental chamber to evaluate the design and function of apparel.
“This technology puts CMU at the forefront of research in the industry,” said Beard. “As the demands of the fashion design workplace evolve, CMU changes its programs to prepare students to meet those demands.”

CMU students successfully compete with students from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York for top internships in New York, Chicago and California.
