The spring Central Michigan University Griffin Policy Forum will feature “The Future of Health Care in Michigan: Availability, Affordability and Quality” at 7 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the Powers Hall Ballroom.

The forum will include three panelists who will discuss health care in Michigan and the impact of the Affordable Care Act on students. The goal is for attendees to better understand the Affordable Care Act and health care system reform.

“People living in rural and remote areas are particularly affected by the shortage and maldistribution,” Dr. Ernest Yoder, dean of CMU’s College of Medicine, said. “We need more physicians and different care models, team-based care models, which leverage the skills of other health professionals. The Affordable Care Act should help drive these changes.”

The forum will be moderated by CMU political science professor Lawrence Sych. In addition to Yoder, other panelists include Chris Priest, senior strategy adviser for Gov. Rick Snyder, and Dr. Thomas L. Simmer, senior vice president and chief medical officer of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

“The Affordable Care Act will evolve over years, if not decades,” Yoder said. “It is critical that we all, students included, understand the reality of the Affordable Care Act and the politics of the debate because students will inherit the Affordable Care Act over the coming years.”

Griffin Policy Forums are hosted twice annually by the Robert and Marjorie Griffin Endowed Chair in American Government, the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the political science department at CMU. The forums help raise political awareness and participation among students, faculty and community members, along with preparing political leaders for Michigan’s future.

Admission to the forum is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to attend a public reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Powers Hall Ballroom. For more information, click here.
